ÉMILE LOUBET. ALS: "Emile Loubet", 1p, 5x8. Paris, 1889 February 1. In French, not translated. On stationery of the "Sénat", to the Director General. Loubet was Prime Minister of France in 1892 and President from 1899-1906. In 1894, French Army officer Alfred Dreyfus (see Lot 314) had been convicted of treason and imprisoned on Devil's Island. An investigation, forced primarily by writer Émile Zola, proved that papers on which Dreyfus had been convicted were forged. The case was the center of a major political division in France in which anti-Semitism played a major part. Dreyfus was tried and convicted a second time in 1899, but President Loubet pardoned him. The original conviction was finally set aside in 1906. Receipt stamp at upper left corner. Pencil notations at left and bottom margins have been erased. Fine condition.
